Moving? Here’s
How to Pack Like a Pro
Step 01
First, get rid of anything you won’t need in your new house. Why pay for transport and storage if you’re just going to donate or discard it anyway?
Step 04
Pack a single room at a time. This will help you stay organized and focused and keep items together based on where you use them.
Step 02
Create a packing plan. Decide which items will be packed together and determine how many boxes and any other supplies you may need.
Step 05
Pack as many things into boxes as you can before moving day. This will make the process go much smoother, rather than tossing everything into random receptacles the day of the move.
Step 03
Make an inventory list of major items and groups of smaller items to make sure nothing gets lost in the shuffle.
Step 06
Pack important items last if you know you’ll need to access them while they’re in storage. Leave them close to the door of your storage unit so you can find them easily. IMPORTANT: Do not pack documents like passports and birth certificates deep into your storage. Keep them handy and accessible at all times to ensure they’re not lost.
The Art of Boxing Items for Storage
Everyone has their own unique way of packing, but here’s what we’ve seen work best for moving and storing items safely in boxes:

-
Double-tape the bottom of all cardboard boxes for extra support and to keep your items from falling out. Packing tape or duct tape works best.
-
Label each box with what’s inside for easy reference later. It’s easy to forget what’s where after time passes or after you've moved everything.
-
Don’t be tempted to overload boxes. Check the weight rating of any boxes you purchase and use more boxes if necessary. Exceeding the weight limit could cause the box to break or be too heavy to move safely.

How to Prepare Furniture & Appliances for Storage
Storing these larger items can be tricky. Fortunately, we’ve got plenty of experience to guide you!

-
Always consult the owner’s manual before moving electronic appliances to ensure your safety and prevent damage.
-
Make sure appliances like washing machines, refrigerators, and dishwashers are completely drained and dry before moving or storing them. Any extra water can cause mold growth or spill and damage other items
-
Similarly, fridges and freezers must be empty! Once you unplug these appliances and they're no longer cooling, any leftover food will quickly spoil.
-
Coil or wrap up electrical cords and tape them to the side of the appliance so they don’t trail along the ground.
-
Tape any doors shut to prevent them from falling open while being moved.
